Spring is in the air

23rd April 2018

What a great time of year to head to Bradford-upon-Avon for a concert in the wonderful Wiltshire Music Centre! This weekend Catrin Finch and I paired up again to present our programme ‘Secret Places of the Soul’, a journey through centuries of song, with readings along the way, to muse on the power of music, its divinity and far-reaching effects. The recital has been a great opportunity to focus on what a joyful profession we’re both in and how very lucky we are to be musicians by trade. And a very warm welcome in the Centre was cheered all the more by a nice relaxed pre-concert talk - thanks to everyone who came! Now that the madness of Easter is over (Passions, recitals, a Creation and a nice morning at BBC Radio 3’s Record Review) it’s good to look ahead to the summer and to a season of festivals. From my home patch of the Gower, Swansea to Ryedale up north, and Sussex’s Petworth on the way, there’s lovely music to work on. And I’ll be making my debut at the Salzburg Festival with some Mozart for Sir Roger Norrington. I’m delighted too to be back on the air with BBC Radio Cymru on Sunday mornings from July, and continuing my slot on Radio 3’s Early Music Late on Sunday nights. I’ve even been invited to Build a Library for Record Review: but I’m keeping schtumm on the discs of my choice! Speaking of CDs, I’m excited to be launching a first-ever disc of the work of Dilys Elwyn Edwards, the renowned Welsh composer whose anniversary we celebrate this year. Pianist Jocelyn Freeman and I were delighted to record with Ty Cerdd, a girl-power project that we’re hoping will reveal what absolute jewels Dilys’s songs are, and since their themes are of nature, the fairy world and landscape, they’re a breath of fresh air in every way. MY biggest uplift these days comes on a Thursday morning, when I run the choir at my little boy’s school. A gang of over fifty children, aged six to nine, have been celebrating their love of singing with me for over a year now, and it’s absolutely the highpoint of each week. Keep it up superstars!
